If you are a rock hound it is worth visiting. Everyone there seems to tell you "oh these rocks have been turned over 300 times, you won’t find anything".. I'd say then you don’t know people.. cause there is always something beautiful that gets missed. I found some nice agates that I was able to make some nice cabochons.. My only complaint would be the camping area. Need more room than the little area they have fenced off. Wasn't sure if the horse area could be used for camping or not. Other than that it was a nice few days of rock hunting in peace & serenity. I would definitely visit again.
I only used the campground as a parking area( the road to the agate beds require a 4×4). Seems like a nice quite place in the middle of nowhere. The campground is about a 1\2 mile walk to the agate beds. I'm planning on camping there next time, so I will have more time to rock hound. Do not plan on having cell service if you camp here. Beautiful country!
This is the campground that is the stepping off place for hunting Fairburn agates - the state gemstone of South Dakota. There is no drinking water here so be prepared. The stream is usually dry but if it has rained beware of the very slick roads due to clay and such as you go up the hill to the rock hunting area.
Nice place to camp and a bit out of the way. A few people showed up in the middle of the night to camp. We're pretty noisy. But was pretty nice.
